Caliph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traced their descent not from Muhammad, but from a puritanic reformer in Morocco who claimed to be the Mahdi (a puritanic reformer in Morocco, bringing down the 'decadent' Almoravid emirate) whose son established a sultanate and claimed to be a caliph.
Crone and Hinds argue that Shi'a Muslims, with their expansive view of the powers of the imamate, have preserved some of the beliefs of early Islam.
But no one took his claim seriously, and he was soon ousted and driven out of Arabia by the Saudis, a rival clan that had no interest in the Caliphate.

(Recall that the Arabs revolted against the remnants of the "Caliphate" in WWI.).
Also, I don't think there was ever a single Caliph without some faction somewhere either contesting his claim or refusing his authority (For example: the Fattimid and Spanish Umayyads caliphates opposing the Abassids).

No, though Mu'awiya became the de facto caliph, he is not and never will be legitimate either in Sunni or Shi'a eyes, because he was not elected, and nor did he govern with the consulation of those governed.
I don't know that Hussein was claiming the caliphate based on Shi'a doctrine, as a sense of entitlement or not.
Now I don't know that Hasan and Hussein, in trying to claim succession to their father's caliphate were fully motivated by Shi'a ideology or not...and if they weren't they weren't any better than what Mu'awiya and Yazid were doing.

 Muawiya
The caliph Umar appointed him governor of Damascus; his kinsman Uthman subsequently enlarged his governorship to include what is today Syria and north-western Iraq.
The conquests of the "Four Righteous Caliphs" had led to an immigration of Arab tribes into Iraq and Syria, each with competing interests.
Thus with Ali's assassination in 661, Muawiya easily moved into Iraq and asserted his claim to the caliphate.

The Sultan as Caliph caused a message to be sent to the Mohammedans of the Philippine Islands forbidding them to enter into any hostilities against the Americans, inasmuch as no interference with their religion would be allowed under American rule.
And in the Sunni Arab world, the end of the caliphate left a vacuum of authority that was filled by myriad radical, revolutionary, or fundamentalist movements.
The American fed Taliban proved that religion and politics is a dangerous mix, which gives disastrous results in the medium run.

For instance, these men who succeeded one another were not related by blood and came to power through some process of consultation.
This would inevitably lead to totalitarian rule and a holy war against the West, an event desired by mainstream Muslims, or so we are told.
