Overview - Bolivia Country Guide - World Travel Guide
Bolivia is a country of great expanse, extensive lakes and salt plains, which induce an elated sense of freedom for any traveller.
Although, domestically, Bolivia has entered an unprecedented era of political stability, such stability has ended a record of military coups and recurrent internal strife that has been little short of ludicrous — there were 192 coups in the 156 years from independence to 1981: an average of one every 10 months.
Although it once held claim to the Atacama coastal strip (lost in the 1928 Wars against Paraguay), Bolivia is now landlocked but never feels claustrophobic, blessed with breathtaking lakes and lofty mountains.

Typical of a new, upstart country, political instability, coups, countercoups and rewritten constitutions were commonplace, as numerous leaders tried to reform the country.
Then, after losing a regional war with Paraguay in 1935, in which it lost much of it original territories, military control returned and a long series of military governments controlled the country till 1982, when the country again returned to a democratically elected form of government.
Note that the protests and demonstrations of 2003 have, for the most part, disappeared, but the motivation for same remains and all travelers here should be cautious and constantly aware of their surroundings.
