Amazon.com: Books: Kolin 1757: Frederick the Great's First Defeat (Campaign, 91)
Unlike some other recent Osprey Campaign series titles, Kolin 1757 follows the standard Osprey format faithfully and even attempts some analysis of why the battle turned out as it did.
The Battle of Kolin was Frederick the Great's first defeat but it has not been covered well in recent historical writing and thus, this volume is something of a godsend to Prussian enthusiasts.
If anything is taught by the campaign of Kolin, it is that "greatness" is battlefield command is determined by exemplary leadership qualities, not the execution of fancy tactical maneuvers.

Battle of Hastenbeck - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The French hoped to draw the attention of Prussia, which was allied with England and Hanover, away from the Bohemian theatre where Prussia and Austria fought several battles (Battle of Lobositz, Battle of Prague, Battle of Kolin).
This coalition army later met a Prussian army at the Battle of Rossbach on November 5, 1757 with disaster.
The Battle of Hastenbeck is one of the most curious battles in history, since both commander-in-chief thought that they lost the battle and were already starting to withdraw from the battlefield.

A THOUSAND YEARS OF THE HUNGARIAN ART OF WAR
In 1757, Hadik commanded a cavalry division in the Battle of Prague and in the Battle of Kolin he participated in the famous charge of Nadasdy, which turned the battle to a milestone of the Seven Years' War.
Right at the beginning of the war he prevented an Austrian disaster in the battle of Lobositz with a surprise attack by his hussars on the pursuing Prussian cavalry./ 17 / For this courageous act Maria Theresa promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant-General.
Thus the weak Prussian army was not forced to fight a great decisive battle, which, considering financial and material sources, geopolitical factors, and the ovenvhelming numerical superiority of the allies, would have ended the war in 1757.

History of Friedrich II by Thomas Carlyle: SEVEN-YEARS WAR RISES TO A HEIGHT Chapter 4 BATTLE OF KOLIN
To Mannstein`s mistake, Friedrich himself, in his account of Kolin, mainly imputes the disaster that followed; and such, then and afterwards, was the universal judgment in military circles; loading the memory of too impetuous Mannstein with the whole.
Here Friedrich "stood during the Battle," say they; and the Prussians "had a battery there." Which remains uncertain to me, at least the battery part of it: that Friedrich himself was there, now and then, can be believed; but not that he kept "standing there" for long together.

[TMP] "Have we forgotten something today, gents?" Topic
In 2006 we have the battle of Lobositz (250th anniversary)and in 2007 the battles of Prague and Kolin both 250th.
This includes what looks like being the biggest ever re-enactment of the battle and also we are going to put on a low key wargame of it - near the site of the battle.
Most people interested in the period will probably already know this, but for those that don't, the present Duke of Marlborough commissioned a large diorama of the battle to marke the 300th anniversary.
