Bachir Gemayel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In his military campaigns, Gemayel secretly accepted military supplies from Israel, and is widely believed, despite public denials, to have accepted Israeli training for his troops.
Although Gemayel did not cooperate with the Israelis publicly, his long history of tactical collaboration with Israel counted against him in the eyes of many Lebanese Muslims.
He was born in Beirut, the son of Pierre Gemayel, founder of the influential Lebanese Kataeb party, or Phalangist Party, a right-wing organization that, although officially secular, was supported almost entirely by Maronite Christians.

Lebanese Forces : Gemayel Accuses 'Ghosts" of Stopping his Phalange Takeover
Gemayel, who returned from 10 years of self-chosen exile in France eight months ago, said the leaders of the two main bickering wings of the Party, Munir Hajj and Elie Karami were on the verge of a reconciliation accord blessed by the Political Bureau, but the 'Ghosts" suddenly intervened and blocked the rapprochement.
Gemayel said the Taif accord was the charter that governed the presence of the Syrian army in Lebanon.
Ex-President Amine Gemayel said in a newspaper interview published Sunday that Lebanon's existence is in peril and accused the 'Ghosts' of blocking his takeover of the Phalange Party leadership.

 Amine Gemayel at AllExperts
Born in Beirut, Gemayel is the son of Pierre Gemayel, founder of the Kataeb Party.
Many have criticized Gemayel for not moving decisively enough to assert the authority of the government, but others have pointed out that with most of the country under foreign occupation, there was little that he could do.
When Bashir Gemayel was assassinated, therefore, Amine was regarded as a natural choice to bring together both the supporters of his slain brother, and his Muslim opponents.

 NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: Pierre Gemayel
Gemayel signed the Cairo Accords of 1969, which allowed Palestinian guerillas to set up bases on Lebanese soil, from which to carry out raids against Israel.
Pierre Gemayel (last name also spelt Jumail or Jumayyil) was a Lebanese political leader.
He soon became convinced, however, that Syria was occupying Lebanon for reasons of its own, and in 1976, he joined other mainly Christian leaders, including former president Camille Chamoun, the diplomat Charles Malik, and the radical Guardians of the Cedars leader Étienne Saqr, in forming the Lebanese Front to oppose the Syrian occupation.

 President Bachir Gemayel: Lebanese Society
Bachir declared: “ For the first time, we now see that the Lebanese Sunnite Muslims of Beirut have started to pay the bill for their existence and their freedom, just as their Christian counterparts have done years ago.
For this reason, Bachir Gemayel, in a TV appearance during the summer of ’82, invited these alien organs to clear out of the country, before ‘they got kicked out by the Lebanese people’.
Those who have followed Bachir Gemayel’s statements from 1975 to 1982 will have noted his scrupulous concern for the security and freedom of all the communities living on Lebanon’s soil.

Lebanese Forces : Bachir Gemayel - The Dream
Gemayel believed that once the foreigners left Lebanon and a new government assumed power, all the Lebanese should by then have put aside their differences.
Gemayel believed in the U.S. leadership of the Free World and he was confident that Washington would strengthen its ties to Lebanon.
Gemayel saw the 1982 Israeli "Operation Peace for Galilee" as an important development for Lebanon which would not only equilibrate Syrian influence on Lebanese politics, but could also generate a new political dynamic, which, if properly used, could lead to the simultaneous withdrawal of Syrian and Israeli troops from Lebanon.

A Maronite Christian, Solange Tutunji married Bachir Gemayel in 1977.
In February 2005, Gemayel announced that she would be a candidate in the parliamentary election due to be held in May. She has since spoken at several major demonstrations against the Syrian occupation and the Syrian-backed government, in the wake of the 14 February assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
She is strongly pro-Western, and in 2003 she rattled the political establishment by publicly supporting U.S. President George W. Bush in his decision to attack Iraq and depose the government of Saddam Hussein.

Lebanon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Israel's plans for Lebanon suffered a severe setback on September 14, 1982, with the assassination of the Phalangist leader and President-elect Bachir Gemayel, who was regarded as secretly sympathetic to Israel.
This period saw the rise of radicalism among the country's factions, and a number of landmark terrorist attacks against American forces, including the destruction of the US Embassy by a truck bomb and an even deadlier attack on the US Marines barracks.
The Parliament failed to elect a successor to President Amine Gemayel (who had replaced his slain brother Bachir in 1982), whose term expired on 23 September.

Radio France Internationale (RFI) reporter, Alain Ménargues, repeated many times in his book "The Secrets of the Lebanese war" that Amine had always been jealous of his brother, who was overall more charismatic, courageous, and most importantly, who had followers -the thing Amine missed badly.
Created by Cheikh Pierre el Gemayel, the Phalanges used to be the Christian counterweight for the muslim "Najjada" before the Lebanese war.
Amine used to find anything to critcize his brother's actions (from his contacts with Israel, to the ways his men used to fight etc...).

A massive bomb exploded in the Kataeb headquarters on September 14, 1982, killing the President-elect and twenty-four other souls.

Gemayel's legacy continues, and his face could be seen on many of the posters carried by the anti-Syrian marchers, who were Muslim and Christian alike, during the demonstrations earlier this year.

The military activity of the Lebanese Forces succeeded in promoting its chief, Cheikh Bachir, to the Presidency of the Republic in the wake of the Israeli incursion that reached Beirut in the summer of 1982, and the ousting of the Syrian troops and Palestinian organizations.
However, after the assassination of Cheikh Bachir and the accession of others to the leadership of the Lebanese Forces, the struggle for leadership among the senior personalities grew to the point of splitting it into factions and internal conflicts that destroyed it and dashed all the hopes it represented.
Since the outbreak of the Lebanese-Palestinian war on April 13, 1975, Abu Arz has toiled to unite the various factions of the Lebanese Resistance in order to intensify its efficiency on the one hand, and to prevent internal clashes among them on the other.
