 Avalon Peninsula
The peninsula is, and has been since the settling of the island, its most populous region.
Sir George CALVERT was granted a portion of the peninsula 1623 and lived there 1627-29, with his headquarters at FERRYLAND on the "Southern Shore." It was his holding, called Avalon after the legendary site where Christianity was introduced to England, for which the peninsula was named.
During the 1600s and 1700s the peninsula saw conflicts between the French and English with France establishing PLACENTIA on the southwest coast as its capital in the 1660s.

As this progressed, sediments were again deposited upon areas of the peninsula which had previously been eroded.
This was reversed about 600 million years ago when a major new ocean, known as Iapetus, began to form.
The Northern Peninsula had previously been on the far side of Iapetus, while Central Newfoundland was created from the old deep ocean bedrock of Iapetus that had been pushed up in the continental collision.

Avalon was, in the legend, the land where King Arthur went when he died.
The Isthmus is a narrow neck of land stubborn enough to have survived the heavy glaciation which cut the two deep bays, Placentia and Trinity, that you can see on either side.
Along the shore you will notice many attractive seashells washed up by the tide and coloured stones that were deposited by volcanic action and polished to their present smooth, round shape by the ebb and flow of the Atlantic.

ABSTRACT: Coastal evolution and sea level variation, Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland: Geomorphic, climatic, and ...
Currently, sea level is rising around the entire peninsula, locally at rates approximately 7 mm/a.
In the late Holocene, sea levels gradually rose, and the southern Avalon Peninsula was affected by a short-lived transgression about 1,100 to 1,000 B.P., followed by a minor regression c.
Detailed investigations and ongoing monitoring at several sites along Conception, Trinity, St.Mary's and Placentia Bays, an on the open Atlantic shore, have revealed that recent local anthropogenic activity, in conjunction with geomorphic factors and climatic changes, has resulted in significant changes in the morphology and sedimentary regimes of almost all the sites studied.

The tops of the hills, which rise to 250 m above sea level, have been well rounded and elongated by the northward-moving ice sheet.
Perched boulders were left balanced delicately on smaller rocks by the melting ice and many can be seen from the highway.
As the ice sheet on the Avalon Peninsula stopped growing and then began to melt, it split into small pockets which then disintegrated, leaving bare the tops of the hills first.
