It borders Jordan on the north, Iraq on the north and north-east, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates on the east, Oman on the south and south-east, and Yemen on the south, with the Persian Gulf to its north-east and the Red Sea to its west.
An institution found in Saudi Arabia is the Mutaween, or religious police, also known as the Authority for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
Many opponents of the House of Saud reject the family's legitimacy and decline to speak of the country as "Saudi Arabia".

Saudi Arabia. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
The population of Saudi Arabia is 90% Muslim Arab of the Wahhabi sect (a branch of Sunni Islam), although there is a small percentage of Shiites, mainly in the northeast.
It is bounded on the west by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea; on the east by the Persian Gulf, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates; on the south by Yemen and Oman; and on the north by Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait.
Saudi Arabia, like other oil-rich Persian Gulf countries, depends heavily upon foreign labor for its oil industry; workers are drawn from Arab countries as well as S and SE Asia.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Arabia
Arabia is the cradle of Islam and, in all probability, the primitive home of the Semitic race.
We have already seen how that part of Arabia adjacent to the Syrian borders was, from the third century on, regarded as the "mother of heresies." The religious and political freedom of the Arab tribes opened the door to all creeds, errors, and heresies.
The origin and progress of Christianity in Arabia is, owing to the lack of sufficiently authenticated historical documents, involved in impenetrable obscurity, and only detached episodes in one part or another of the peninsula can be grouped together and studied.

 Saudi Arabia
Historically, Saudi Arabia has occupied a special place in the Islamic world as the very heartland of Islam.
Inspired by Islam, the Arabs expanded out of Arabia spreading Islam and the Arabic language.
In the 13th century, the Mongol invasions dealt a devastating blow to the Arabs' eastern lands, and their empire began to decline.

 Saudi Arabia energy oil information
Saudi Arabia is keen to protect the environmental safety of the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, and the Saudi petroleum industry--led by Saudi Aramco, the state oil company--has contributed to environmental protection through safety measures, early warning systems against possible leakage, and advanced methods to control and contain any pollution.
This figure stands out all the more in comparison to Saudi Arabia's neighbors: per capita carbon emissions in Israel were 2.8 metric tons of carbon, in Libya 2.1, Iran 1.3, Turkey 0.8, and Egypt 0.5.
The spill, described by then-Pentagon spokesman Pete Williams described the act as "the worst environmental disaster in the history of the Persian Gulf," is also the worst recorded oil spill in world history, with approximately 5.7 million barrels of oil dumped.

Dr Omran Muhammad, a Kuwaiti national visiting Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage, was reportedly detained in April, apparently in connection with his political views, and held in the al-Mabahith al-'Amma (General Intelligence) headquarters in the city of al-Madina and then in deportation prisons in al-Madina and Jeddah.
In the cases of Yolando Isanan and other foreign nationals executed in Saudi Arabia, neither the families nor the relevant embassies were believed to have been informed of the executions until after they had been carried out.
They were arrested in Saudi Arabia, reportedly after overstaying a two-week visa which allowed them to go on pilgrimage to Mecca.

Saudi Arabia continued to provide refuge and financial support to Idi Amin, the exiled Ugandan leader whose regime was responsible for a reign of terror that left an estimated 300,00 dead in the 1970s.
The U.S. did not make public guarantees it claimed to have sought and received from Saudi Arabia prior to his deportation that he would not be maltreated and would receive a fair trial.
"It is absurd to impose on an individual or a society rights that are alien to its beliefs or principles," Saudi Arabia's deputy premier and effective head of state Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz told the U.N. Third Millenium summit in New York on September 6.

HRW World Report 1999: Saudi Arabia: Human Rights Developments
In March the Saudi ambassador to Pakistan reportedly sought the aid of Pakistan’s minister of interior in returning Ahmad to Saudi Arabia, and claimed that Kausar remained in Saudi Arabia because she was unwilling to travel without her husband.
The government of Saudi Arabia, an absolute monarchy, continued to violate a broad array of civil and political rights, allowing no criticism of the government, no political parties, nor any other potential challenges to its system of government.
Foreigners were particularly vulnerable to manipulation of the judicial system, as in the case of Farzana Kausar and her three small children, all Pakistani nationals, who were detained for almost ten months, apparently in an attempt to force her husband to return to Saudi Arabia.

Documentation of Internet Filtering in Saudi Arabia
Among the specific pages blocked were numerous Amnesty International pages about Saudi Arabia and the saudiinstitute.org reports on Human Rights in Saudi Arabia.
Having requested some 64,557 distinct web pages and found 2,038 to be blocked, we conclude that Saudi Arabia indeed blocks a range of web content beyond that which is sexually explicit.
While blocked content on these sites seemed to be restricted to that portion of content specific to Saudi Arabia -- top-level site home pages were not found to be blocked -- these pages are nonetheless of particular interest since they are produced by well-known international human rights organizations.

During the Gulf War, Saudi Arabia provided much of the needed financial assistance and was engaged in a massive clean-up operation of oil after Iraq had deliberately released several thousand barrels into the Persian Gulf.
In Sept. 1992 Saudi Arabia banned the importation of Jordanian fresh produce alleging contamination.
In Nov. 1992 King Fahd dismissed several members of the council of religious scholars (ulema) and replaced them with 17 younger clerics after they failed to condemn a petition signed by 107 scholars and clerics calling on the government to adhere to strict Islamic law and accusing it of wasting billions of dollars.

The US government appears to be continuing to keep pressure on Saudi Arabia, in reference to its record on religious freedom, without bringing out the hammers.
The religious freedom commission, in a statement, said real progress was absent in Saudi Arabia on religious conditions and that the U.S. government should use the 180 days to achieve real progress.

 Saudi Arabia Country Analysis Brief
In June 2001, Saudi Arabia seized ownership of IPSA "in light of the Iraqi government's persistence in its stands." Theoretically, IPSA could be used for Saudi oil transport to the Red Sea, although the Saudis have stated that "there are no plans" to do so.
In March 2005, Saudi Arabia and India signed an agreement on oil cooperation, with the Saudis reportedly interested in acquiring a stake in the 300,000-bbl/d Paradip refinery and the 152,000-bbl/d Vizakh refinery in India.
In addition to direct security, Saudi Arabia is known to maintain "redundancy" (i.e., multiple options for transportation and export) in its oil system, in part as a form of indirect security against any one facility being disabled.
