Anegada Sea Turtle Recovery Project--Complete Report
Flamingos are further linked to iguanas locally in that a number of people mentioned in interviews their understanding that flamingos were reintroduced to the island, in part, to 'make up for' the removal of some of the iguana.
Based on interview data and direct community contacts, it would appear that the figure would be significantly lower for Anegada, but that is not to say that the population of the island, though relatively stable in overall numbers has not been quite fluid over time.
Interviews were qualitative in nature, and persons were selected for interview based on network or "snowball" sampling, where individuals known to be knowledgeable on particular relevant subjects were asked for recommendations of others to be included in the study.

 Anegada
It is said that it has some of the best bone-fishing flats in the world and certainly the best in the BVI.
Meaning the 'drowned' island, this Robinson Crusoe island in the sun lacks the mountainous peaks of the other islands - its highest point is only 28' above sea level.
Anegada is well known in the BVI for its bone-fishing.

The island remains a notorious ship killer, and any attempt at a landfall without expert local knowledge may add today's explorers to Anegada's more than generous list of victims
In fact, several hundred ships lie wrecked around this quaint island.
Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, used it as one of his favorite hideouts

On the East End of Anegada, large piles of conch shells, some even forming islands, attest to the presence of aboriginal people.
Interestingly, Anegada has some of the finest of both shallow water and deep sea fishing in the world.

 DAY 8
We can see not only how big the island is, but also how flat it is. Anegada is the flattest of all the Virgin Islands, too.
Anegada is flat because it is made from an old coral reef that is now out of the water.
Anegada is different from all the other Virgin Islands because it is not hilly, like the other Virgin Islands.

 ANEGADA ISLAND, BVI - SHIPWRECKS
While the Society has been involved in a number of activities connected with maritime history over the years, it is probably the underwater shipwreck activities on Anegada that has drawn the greatest interest, especially among individuals familiar with the treacherous reefs associated with that island.
Given the location of Anegada, close to a major north-south shipping lane, and with extensive reefs extending all around the island and up to about 11 miles seaward towards the southeast, it's no wonder it has claimed so many unwary and unfortunate mariners.
From time to time I have been contributing manuscripts and research material to The Maritime Historical Research Society.

While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada is flat and low.
Anegada is the only one of the British Virgin Islands formed from coral and limestone, rather than being of volcanic origin.

She noted that a hardworking library committee and members of the Anegada Progressive League in the United States also played a significant role in the development of library services on the island.
The Deputy Chief Librarian said the new library is a place to be proud of, a place where residents of Anegada can go, not only to find information from books and magazines, but on the Internet as well.

Every evening during sunset cocktails, the subject of Anegada would come up.
This, I thought, was the ideal description of Anegada.

 Anegada Project
Anegada is one of the many islands that make up the British Virgin Islands, but it is in many ways extremely unique.
Already we have interviewed a scientist studying the island and scheduled a class field trip to Anegada for March 2nd, 2005.
Recently we saw a newsletter on the Anegada Darwin Biodiversity Project, which studies the ecosystem and the unique plants and animals that live on the island.

Ultimate BVI - The British Virgin Islands Resource about Anegada
Anegada comes from the Spanish word for sunken land; it is a coral island with its highest point only 28 feet above sea level, covering 15 square miles it can barely be seen on the horizon when approached by sea.
Anegada was quite popular with the pirates because of its dangerous reef and difficult access, the island provided seclusion as well as a steady supply of ships to loot as they wrecked on the reef.
Anegada's tourist facilities are well varied including a hotel, guest cottages and a campground.

No volcanic upstart like other impetuous land masses we could name, Anegada is a large coral midden that grew gradually from the ocean floor.

The vegetation is noted to be "scrubby," though they do have some tall tress.
Its population is said to be between 150 to 200 (Muggles, lol), and it is known for its beautiful beaches and remote atmosphere.
