He had a series of catastrophic conflicts with European representatives, and his expulsion of the British consul led to the bombardment of Algiers in 1824.
The agreement put an end to the Barbary Wars, the assault on U.S. shipping in the Mediterranean that had begun in 1801.
Only four European ships had been captured in 1801 and one in 1803.

With the coming of independence in 1962 Algiers became the capital of the new republic.
Since independence, Algeria has played an important role within the "Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries" (OPEC), the non-Aligned movement, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the Arab League.

TAP: Vol 15, Iss. 1. Revolution Now (and Then)!. J. Hoberman.
Commissioned by the Algerian government, influenced by The Wretched of the Earth and operating, as Pontecorvo would say, under the "dictatorship of truth," the director and his screenwriter, Franco Solinas, projected the post-World War II neorealism of Open City and La Terra Trema into a new arena: the barrio of colonized underdevelopment.
The son of a prosperous Italian Jewish manufacturer, Pontecorvo had been a Communist partisan during World War II and a Communist Party functionary thereafter.
A few months later, in the course of the trial of 13 Black Panthers charged with a conspiracy to bomb public places and murder police officers in New York, an undercover detective testified that defendant Lumumba Shakur (stepfather of the murdered rapper Tupac Shakur) told him that The Battle of Algiers was required viewing.

 Editorial: Algiers Summit
THE two day Arab League summit which ended yesterday in Algiers, concluded with a restatement of the plan originally propounded by Saudi Arabia, in which peace with Israel will be made once an independent Palestinian state has been created and refugees have been permitted to return.
This latest top-level meeting of the league had been criticized in some quarters with suggestions even that the organization was now moribund and powerless.

Draft Arab security strategy adopted in Algiers
The Algiers Declaration stressed the need to make a distinction between terrorism and people's right to combat foreign occupation and aggression by all means, including armed struggle, and to boost cooperation among Arab states to preserve Arab states' security, stability and unity.
The Arab interior ministers expressed backing to the international community moves to hold a conference, under the U.N. aegis, on struggle against terrorism as a transnational plague that threatens the security and integrity of all states and all peoples.
According to the session final statement, the strategy seeks to shield Arab states from any terrorist aggressions, whether internal or external, to preserve persons' security, rights and property and to protect society from catastrophes and dangers.

 Background/History of Algiers
Demolished in the 400s by the Vandals, Algiers then became part of the Byzantine empire in 146 BC, was controlled by the Arabs in 650, and, as part of the Berber dynasty the 900s, became a focal point for Mediterranean trade ("Algiers" Encyclopaedia of the Orient).
In myths, Icosium is thought to be the city which was established by 20 friends of the legendary hero Hercules ("Algeria" ArabNet).
As the base of the Ottoman navy, Algiers became invaluable, for it defended the Ottoman positions into the western Mediterranean and boosted the Ottoman economy as the center of piracy.

Battle of Algiers by Kevin Beary
Though Pontecorvo was a communist who sympathized with the FLN, it is quite easy to watch and appreciate the film even if one identifies with France’s mission civilisatrice and believes in the superiority of Western over Eastern values.
For Battle of Algiers shows us what the United States military is likely to be up against as it seeks to carry out its mission civilisatrice in that part of the world.
Unfortunately, at the moment it is not available in the United States, which really is a pity, given the current occupation of Iraq and the possibility of further wars of occupation in the Middle East.

The Battle of Algiers - New York Movie Review
Re-creating the carnage of fifties Algeria—bombings, assassinations, police torture—The Battle of Algiers is as relevant today as it was in 1965.
But in the end, the horror unleashed in The Battle of Algiers cannot be fitted into neat partisan formulations, which is perhaps why so many disparate groups, from the Panthers to the Pentagon, have tried to claim the film for their own agenda.
The Battle of Algiers has often been compared to Potemkin as an example of incendiary, documentary-style political filmmaking.

Amazon.ca: DVD: Sherlock Holmes: And The Pursuit To Algiers
In some ways, its plot is similar to the next film, "Terror by Night," in that Holmes is once again renting out his services as a bodyguard of sorts, this time protecting the son of the assassinated King of Ravenia as he sails home to claim his throne.
This is one of twelve movies of Rathbone as Holmes put out during the war and shortly thereafter by Universal.
Pursuit to Algiers will disappoint those Sherlock Holmes fans who expect -- not without reason -- a mystery film with all sorts of clues, red herrings, etc. Algiers is in fact really a thriller more than a mystery, and for those who can accept this fact, it's a very decent entertainment.

:: New York Times on "The Battle of Algiers" ::
Challenged by terrorist tactics and guerrilla warfare in Iraq, the Pentagon recently held a screening of "The Battle of Algiers," the film that in the late 1960's was required viewing and something of a teaching tool for radicalized Americans and revolutionary wannabes opposing the Vietnam War.
The question of how conventional armies can contend with such tactics and subdue their enemies seems as pressing today in Iraq as it did in Algiers in 1957.
No details of the discussion were provided but if the talk was confined to the action of the film it would have focused only on the battle for the city, which ended in 1957 in apparent triumph for the French with the killing of La Pointe and the destruction of the network.

He "had been the English Pro-Consul at Algiers for many years," likely due to his connections with British merchants who called there.
Regardless of his purpose, however, his first act in London - as with any gentleman - was to engage a servant, and this was what led to his downfall.
Whether or not he intended to stay was uncertain; the pogrom of 1805 was still four years away, but tensions were rising between the Jewish and Muslim inhabitants of Algiers, and Bensammon might have decided to seize the opportunity.

Now showing at the Pentagon ... csmonitor.com
Filmed on real locations with a largely nonprofessional cast, "The Battle of Algiers" is a quintessential docudrama, although that term had not been invented when Pontecorvo directed the movie from ideas jotted down by an FLN chief serving time in a French prison.
Although it was made almost 40 years ago, the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks and the ongoing violence in Iraq make "The Battle of Algiers" at least as compelling now as in the past.
A result of this reasoning is the use of torture, which leads many French citizens to take a more critical look at the brand of moral clarity their leaders espouse.

One of the most influential political films in history, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers (La bataille d’Alger) vividly recreates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s.
The 1999 film restoration ofThe Battle of Algiers was undertaken at Cinecittà as part of the “Adopt a Film: 100 Films Worth Saving” project, promoted by the Council of Ministry and funded by contributions from the cities of Salerno and Montemurlo.
Shot in the streets of Algiers in documentary style, the film is a case study in modern warfare, with its terrorist attacks and the brutal techniques used to combat them.
