Algerian War of Independence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The war uprooted more than 2 million Algerians, who were forced to relocate in French camps or to flee to Morocco, Tunisia, and into the Algerian hinterland, where many thousands died of starvation, disease, and exposure.
Before the referendum, Abbas lobbied for international support for the GPRA, which was quickly recognized by Morocco, Tunisia, and several other Arab countries, by a number of Asian and African states, and by the Soviet Union and other Central-European states.
The struggle was touched off by the FLN in 1954, only two years before France gave up its control over Tunisia and Morocco.

Independent French and Algerian journalists, however, estimate that some 30,000 persons, including more than 70 foreigners, have been killed since the civil war began in 1992.
