Tourists leave Corsica after police free port, Marseille terminals
The port of Ajaccio was totally under the control of 150 police officers who would "hold the only operating seaport in Corsica at all costs", said police chief Christian Lambert.
In the Corsican port of Bastia police used tear gas to disperse about 30 protesters, mainly masked youths, who lobbed stones at officers as several thousand people rallied in support of the striking workers.
There was no resistance from 15 or so strikers from the National Corsica Mediterranean Company (SNCM) who have picketed the site since four leaders of the pro-nationalist Union of Corsican Workers (STC) were arrested on Wednesday after hijacking an SNCM ship.
