By 1904 most of Aceh was under Dutch control, and had an indigenous government that cooperated with the colonial state.
Aceh has substantial natural resources, including oil and gas - some estimates put Aceh gas reserves as being the largest in the world.

A presidential decree granted amnesty to about five hundred former GAM members who were in exile in other countries, and unconditionally released about 1,400 members who had been jailed by the Government.

As of late 1996 the Government claimed that the "Aceh Merdeka" movement had been eliminated, although Aceh was still officially listed as one of Indonesia's three "trouble spots" (along with East Timor and Irian Jaya), and the Government issued public calls for the "rebels" to come home to their families.
A 9.0 earthquake on the floor of the Indian Ocean sent a massive tsunami towards the island of Sumatra, with Aceh bearing the brunt of its force as the land mass closest to the epicenter.
Many in Aceh claim that not enough of that money has been returned to the province for development.
