 Lecture 7: Classical Greece, 500-323BC
By about 500 B.C. the Greek city states had lost their kings (with the exception of Sparta) and had embraced a new form of government through councils of citizens.
Delegates met on the island of Delos in 478 B.C. The allies swore oaths of alliance which were to last until lumps of iron, thrown into the sea, rose again.
The Athenians lent their support but the revolt ultimately collapsed in 493 B.C. Darius proposed now to invade mainland Greece – his prime target was Athens.

Ethics of Greek Politics and Wars 500-360 BC by Sanderson Beck
Spartan Hegemony 404-371 BC According to Thucydides during the Peloponnesian War in 424 BC the Spartan general Brasidas had told the Thracians that the Peloponnesians did not seek empire but were struggling to end Athenian imperialism; Brasidas offered autonomy to Thrace, and his policy was confirmed in oaths by the Spartan ephors.
After the major Spartan defeat at Leuctra in 371 BC, the harmosts, which were to be voluntarily withdrawn from cities according to the treaty, were expelled, as cities reacted against their oligarchies with democratic revolutions.
At the battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC the Greeks held their own against superior numbers, but after wounding his brother Artaxerxes, Cyrus was killed.

In 546 BC Peisistratus, supported by the hill people, landed at Marathon and defeated the Athenians defending their laws in the battle at Pallene.
Some have speculated that this caused the downfall of the Minoans and that this explains the legend of the destruction of Atlantis.
In the middle of the seventh century BC they got ships from Corinth, traded with Sparta, and one of their merchant ships went beyond the Mediterranean Sea to the silver mines of Tartessus in Iberia.

Ancient Greece: Archaic Greece, 800-500 BC
They had abandoned their cities between 1200 and 1100 BC for reasons that remain shrouded in mystery; the Greeks believed that a cataclysmic and ferocious invasion of northern Greek barbarians, the Dorians, had wiped out the Mycenean civilization.
The tribal or clan units of the dark ages slowly grew into larger political units; beginning around 800 BC, trade began to dramatically accelerate between the peoples of Greece.
This period gave the Greeks the religion their religion, mythology, and foundational history in their final forms; the close of the Dark Ages would also gave the Greeks the rudiments of their greatest political achievement: the polis, or "city-state."

 500 - 479 BC
He was convinced that the city had to build a powerful fleet, because it was only at sea that the Athenians could hope to prevail - on land the numerical superiority of the Persians was overwhelming.
The war ended one year later with the victory of the Greeks at the Battle of Plataea (479 BC).
Ten years later, in 480 BC, the Persians launched their second campaign; the battle of Salamina proved a veritable catastrophe for the experienced navy of King Xerxes, and an impressive vindication of the newly-constructed Athenian fleet.

With a bloodcurdling yell, the Dacian spearmen threw themselves in one last desperate attempt against the Roman shield line.

In the 200's BC the Romans took over the Phoenician colonies in the southern Mediterranean, and then during the 100's they were able to take over the kingdoms of West Asia and Egypt as well.
This was partly due to a policy of letting the conquered people participate in the republican government.
