In a campaign (fully detailed in the Mithridatic War and therefore not recounted here) lasting from 88 to 85 BC, Sulla punished Mithridates and those who supported him, but renewed political problems cut the campaign short.
By 88 BC, social and political turmoil in Rome left the door open for Mithridates to conduct a major invasion west into Roman territory.
While he managed to shape a great kingdom out of his early conquests, his invasions eventually led not only to his own final defeat, but the complete absorption of Pontos into the Roman sphere of influence.

 Rome&Italy
Indeed, the principles of subjugation, organization and assimilation were well established during the Middle and Late Republic (265 -31 BC) and were eventually and successfully used to incorporate provinces as different as Britain and Mauretania.
From that point, integration proceeded rapidly so that Cicero (in 63 BC) and later Augustus (35 BC) could claim to enjoy the support of Tota Italia ("All Italy"); Rome itself became the communis patria ['common fatherland'] of Italy.
Note the areas that were for "full citizens", those for "half citizens" (could not vote or hold office at Rome) and "allies".
