FactsOfIsrael.com: Portugal, 1497, racist king kicks the Jews out
In October 1497 some twenty thousand Jews from all parts of Portugal gathered in Lisbon where they were herded onto the courtyard of Os Estâos, a palace normally used for diplomatic receptions.
He knew of the value of the Jews and may genuinely have felt he could convert them.
The Jerusalem Post's feature "This day in history" reports on October 31, 1497, when a king from Portugal decides to kick all Jews out:

John Cabot: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
All we know about the voyage is contained in a 1497 letter from John Day, an English merchant in the Spanish trade, to Christopher Columbus.
It states that "he [Cabot] went with one ship, he had a disagreement with the crew, he was short of food and ran into bad weather, and he decided to turn back." The following year, Cabot had better luck.

Cornish Rebellion of 1497 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Therefore, when the people of Cornwall were charged extra war taxes in 1497 - possibly as a result of the brief skirmish by Scotland into England inspired by Perkin Warbeck's pretence to the English throne - the Cornish had had enough.
The main cause of the rebellion was the raising of war taxes by King Henry VII for a campaign against Scotland.
The tin miners lived in poverty, earning very small amounts of money, much of which was taxed, and they felt they had no involvement in wars with Scotland as they lived so far from it.
