CAN Tago Mago reviews and MP3
I guess I can't objectively say that "Tago Mago" is for everyone- there will always be people who simply don't care for such unrestrained ecstasy (or unrestrained weirdness for its own sake, depending on your point of view), and there will always be people who equate artistic opacity with a kind of cheat or laziness.
A more meaningful way to write about "Tago Mago" would be in free-form poetry comprised of a few different languages as well as numerous nonsense words, illustrated with impressionist doodles on the margins, and repeated ad infinitum for effect.
Suffice to note that Tago Mago, and Krautrock genre in general is not everbody's cup of coffee, so care should be taken when approaching this (and most other Can) album...

The warden of Mago National Park, interviewed last month, suggested that African Parks not only wanted the local people removed from the Omo and Mago Parks, but that it was also planning to put up an electric fence to "protect" the park from squatters and poachers.
Paul van Vlissingen, the billionaire Dutchman who founded African Parks, has given assurances that his company has no intention of forcing people to move from the Omo and Mago parks and has disassociated himself from government attempts at forced eviction from Nech Sar.
According to a number of Mursi men, officials from the Mago Park told them in March that they would have to abandon one of their villages on the Mago River, called Kon Ba, or there would be "a big fire in the village."

Tago Mago is so daring, imaginative, and downright schizophrenic that it makes everything else that Can ever did seem tame and safe by comparison.
TAGO MAGO is one in a triumvirate of essential Can albums (also including EGE BAMYASI and FUTURE DAYS).
This must be my sixth attempt to write a review of Tago Mago, Can's third album, which is far and away the most difficult album to write about that I have ever encountered.

Can: Ege Bamyasi (1972) Music Reviews - Germany - Hippyland
Although Ege Bamyasi is regarded as Can''s most accessible album, it happened I warmed up to Tago Mago and Future Days quicker than Ege Bamyasi, even the weird experiments on Tago Mago ("Aumgn", "Peking O") which were way longer and way more relentless than their following albums (including "Soup").
Ege Bamyasi is Can's followup to Tago Mago.
For the longest time, ''Tago Mago'' has been my favorite album- and I still believe that it is one of their most groundbreaking and influential albums.

I've always thought of Tago Mago as their masterpiece...given the little that I know about them.
04-16-02 02:11 PM It's always difficult for me to choose among their 1968-1974 albums, but Tago Mago has got to be one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded, anywhere, by anyone--with Future Days a close second.
I had an 'out-of-body' experience listening to Tago Mago for the first time.

 EARLASH : Features
On Tago Mago, Can became the Can that's received intense adoration to this day; they morphed into an intense musical force that even now cannot easily be pigeonholed into any specific genre or category.
The band's first four records (1969's Monster Movie, 1970's Soundtracks, 1971's Tago Mago, and 1972's Ege Bamyasi) are apt at showing how the band got to where they went, showing them progress from post-psychedelic experimentalists to unclassifiable geniuses.
The debt post-punk troopers the Fall and Public Image Limited paid to the band are obvious; with Tago Mago, Can invented post punk before punk itself even fully took shape, as evidenced by liberal use of feedback, tape experiments, and general abrasiveness.

Cokemachineglow.com - Can: Monster Movie / Soundtracks / Tago Mago / Ege Bamyasi
Tago Mago sees the band striving for its own sound; this album was obviously birthed a few weeks after the groove-searching experimentations of their first two, likely when they’d become more comfortable with being on their feet for hours every afternoon.
Mago does boast an overall gorgeous psych-funk-pop feel, but it’s just too bad they didn’t beat Dungen to the punch: having been released mere weeks too late, Tago Mago seems to rely too heavily on Ejste’s fantastic Ta Det Lugnt in its psych-throwback spirit, and thereby suffers from a perceived lack of authenticity.
I mean, by Mago it’s time to synthesize the previous meanderings into a career-defining mission statement.

At Ilipa Scipio's strategy decisively defeated the Carthaginian army, which in 205 BC surrendered Spain at Gades on the Atlantic coast, as Mago Barca, Hannibal's brother - and the last Carthaginian general in Spain - received orders from Carthage to sail for Italy and loaded the remaining forces onto ships.
Mago suffered a defeat in northern Italy, and both he and Hannibal were recalled that year to defend Carthage.

Can's albums featuring Suzuki (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Future Days, and portions of Soundtracks) detailed their transition from boisterous trance rockers to sophisticated masters of ambience and texture.
Tago Mago balanced lengthy, almost psychedelic sound collage pieces with James Brown-ian funk motion and the archetypical Krautrock groove of tunes like "Oh Yeah" and "Halleluwah." Can further refined their funk on Ege Bamyasi, even incorporating pop elements such the occasional verse/chorus/verse structure and melodic hook.

Can (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tago Mago (1971) is a groundbreaking, influential and deeply unconventional record, based on intensely rhythmic jazz-inspired drumming, improvised guitar and keyboard soloing (frequently intertwining each other), extensive tape edits, and Suzuki's idiosyncratic vocalisms.
Tago Mago was followed by Ege Bamyasi (1972), a more accessible but still avant-garde record which featured the catchy "Vitamin C" and the Top 40 German hit "Spoon".
The rhythm section's work on Tago Mago has been especially praised: One critic writes that much of the album is based on "long improvisations built around hypnotic rhythm patterns" [1]; another writes that "'Halleluwah' finds them "pounding out a monster trance/funk beat" [2].

Whereas the original Tago Mago tape was more of a divided piece of work with Coxhill on the one side and Eyeless in Gaza on the other, the result on "Country Bizarre: Home Produce" is a much improved flow and the album now appears as a whole.
Originally released in 1982 in France on a limited edition audio cassette tape only, the old Tago Mago recordings have on "Home Produce: Country Bizarre" been infused with new life, new arrangements and with additional new material.
Martyn Bates and Pete Becker (Eyeless In Gaza) have thus very successfully produced an album that brings the more than 2 decades old Tago Mago material right up to the 21st century, but without the expense of losing any of the character of the original sounds.
