 Low Countries
Prior to early modern nationbuilding, the Low Countries referred to a wide area of northern Europe roughly stretching from Dunkirk at its south-western point to the area of Schleswig-Holstein at its north-eastern point, from the estuary of the Scheldt in the south to Frisia in the north.
The Low Countries were the scene of the early northern towns, built from scratch rather than developed from ancient centers, that mark the reawakening of Europe in the 12th century.
The Low Countries, the historical region of de Nederlanden, are the countries (see "Country") on low-lying land around the delta of the Rhine, Scheldt, and Meuse (Maas) rivers.

Stargate Information Archive -> Forums -> Ring Platforms - low technology for Ancients?
A startling piece of technology which opens up new possibilities is valuable to their race as it allows research into new fields, however making something more efficient does not open up new fields… unless of course the technology is central to their culture like the Stargate was to them.
In Atlantis you can see they have those cupboards which transport instantly like the Aschen have but you'd have thought this technology would be used a long time before atlantis was built.
However its clearly stated in the Lost City part 2 (and maybe Before then) that the rings are the Anicent's technology and not just adapted from it.

A few words about Low Saxon (Low German)
This label has been symbolically convenient in denying Low Saxon separate language status by creating the impression that it is a dialect group contained within German, aided by the fact that its speakers in Germany consider themselves ethnic Germans.
Low Saxon used to be the language of the medieval Hanseatic (Hansa) Trading League that began in the mid-13th century as a protective alliance of several port cities along the shores of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
This has been another convenient excuse for denying public support to benefit the survival of the language.

 UWeek Vol.17, No.6 November 4, 1999
Hahn says his poetry, both in Low Saxon and English, is a way of unleashing a part of his personality that is not expressed in his job, where he must be organized and keep others organized.
In North German cities, people who speak Low Saxon have an image that U.S. residents would associate with the characters in "The Dukes of Hazzard" or "The Beverly Hillbillies." In that sense, there's a parallel with what English-speakers might think of folks who speak Appalachian, Hahn suggests.
That's like referring to Scots as "English," or to Catalan, Galician and Aragonese as "Spanish." Low Saxon is not German, though until recently it was commonly referred to as a German dialect group, and its speakers in Germany have come to be considered ethnically German.

Castle Tombs Commissioner: Thomas W. Hynes
Low and Hynes came to know each other as they addressed, in their respective spheres of activity, the plight of the poor in Brooklyn.
Although by all accounts, the Low administration proved to be among the city's better ones in terms of reforms, rectitude, debt reduction and rendering of most basic services, the aristocratic mayor himself lacked a down-to-earth friendly manner attractive to voters across party lines.
A reformist Republican mayor of the City of Brooklyn for two terms (1882-86), Low had been the Citizen Union nominee in 1897 to become the consolidated Greater New York's first mayor.

Plautdietsch, or Mennonite Low German, is a language spoken by the Mennonites who trace their roots to the Low Countries and north Germany, but who adopted an East Low German dialect while they were refugees in the Vistula delta area of Royal Prussia (later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), beginning in the early-to-mid 1500s.

And by the 1940s after 20 years of low German immigration, German Americans for the most part spoke English and participated in mainstream politics and society; many had Anglicized their names to prevent a recurrence of the random persecution.
German involvement in the labor movement did not sit well with nativists, who, in the last decades of the 19th century, were again seeking support for anti-immigration laws.
Promoting German culture did not mean abandoning the new homeland; indeed, many German Americans believed that the national interests of Germany and the United States were complementary, so that support for the one would ultimately benefit the other.

Fondad publication - Helping the Poor? The IMF and Low-Income Countries
Development assistance shifted in the 1980s from financing investment to promoting policy reform, since it was believed that low-income countries were held back more by weak policies than by lack of finance for investment.
Various authors conclude that the IMF should adapt its conditionality to the needs of the low-income countries, support capacity building geared at greater empowerment of the borrowing countries and focus on longer-term planning and pro-poor macroeconomic frameworks.
Analysing in detail the policies pursued by, especially, the IMF the book reveals that the assistance has remained insufficient, often mal-directed and still too much inspired by beliefs held in Washington.

The relationship between the two is not linear, with German on one end and Dutch on the other, with Low Saxon in between, but rather is triangular, with each about equally distant from and equally close to the other two, and each pair of them sharing some characteristics not shared by the third.
Actually, the distance between German and Low Saxon is about the same as that between German and Dutch, and if one tries to include Low Saxon within German, then one will have to include Dutch within German as well.
Now, I notice that the German government is trying hard to purge all traces of vocabulary that was specific to East Germany during the Communist period.
